'ByteSize' from BitSoft ======================== ByteSize will provide a view of disc usage by file type, giving information on the total number of files and bytes for each file extension present. The start drive directory can be specified, and an option to include files in all sub-directories is included. Once the count is complete a list of all the file extensions is displayed together with the total number of files and bytes. Selecting one extension from the list shows the number of files and bytes using this extension, and the percentage of the total number of bytes. The file extension list is always sorted alphabetically when the count is completed, but it can be re-sorted by the number of bytes or number of files. By default the count includes all files irrespective of the attributes set. The option buttons can be used to select different file attribute types, and the totals and percentages displayed both for the extension type and overall total then reflect this. Note that files can be included in more than one selection if they have more than one attribute set. Normal files are those with no attributes set, and System/Hidden includes all files that have either or both of these attributes set. A summary report of all file extensions used and the number of bytes of each type can be displayed on screen, sent to the default printer, or to a text file BYTESIZE.LST in the program directory. An increase in speed during the Count process may be gained by switching on 'Quiet Mode', but the Stop button cannot then be used to abort the process. The total allocated storage space allows for 1000 different file extensions which should cover all situations. A message is displayed if this is exceeded however, and versions of ByteSize are available with differing storage capacity if required. ByteSize was written using Microsoftİ Visual Basic version 2, and does not write any initialisation files or change existing Windows files in any way. It requires the file VBRUN200.DLL to be present in the program or WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory.
